British Parliament Approves Genetically Engineered “Three-Parent” Embryos

(LifeNews.com) -- Members of the British parliament today voted to make Britain the first country in the world to allow scientists to create three-parent genetically-engineered embryos, sometimes called “designer babies.”

In the process, the babies the babies, born from genetically modified embryos, would have DNA from a mother, a father and from a female donor. The British parliament voted 382 to 128 in favor of the technique and Prime Minister David Cameron allowed a free vote on the issue and voted for it.

Conservative lawmaker Fiona Bruce said the measure would lead to “designer babies.”

“Where will it lead? The answer has to be that we stop here. The answer has to be that we say this is a red line in our country, as in every other country in the world, that we will not cross,” she said during the debate. MORE

March for Life 2015 unites 'pro-life generation’

(CNA/EWTN News).- “We are the pro-life generation! We are the pro-life generation!” The chant could be heard along Constitution Avenue, as cold weather in the nation’s capital did not deter the masses from taking part in the 2015 March for Life. The massive crowds – consisting largely of young people – swarmed downtown Washington, D.C., praying, marching and witnessing to life. Crowds were estimated at upwards of 200,000 for the annual march, which is held on or around Jan. 22 each year to mark the anniversary of the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that mandated legal abortion nationwide. Pro-lifers flooded Twitter as well, posting pictures of themselves with life-affirming messages and the hashtag #WhyWeMarch. MORE

Ohio Pro-Life Bill Would Ban Abortions After 20 Weeks on Babies Who Feel Intense Pain

(LifeNews.com) - Today, Ohio Right to Life announced landmark legislation that will ban abortions in Ohio at 20 weeks gestation, the point during pregnancy at which pre-born children can feel pain. This legislation, which is similar to National Right to Life’s Pain-Capable legislation, will be introduced in the Ohio General Assembly in the coming weeks. Significantly, the legislation challenges the viability limit on abortion restrictions, commonly triggered at 24 weeks, that the U.S. Supreme Court imposed in the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision. “Our Pain-Capable legislation will alter the abortion debate in Ohio” said Stephanie Ranade Krider, executive director of Ohio Right to Life.  MORE

Standing Up for Life in Mission Territory

(NCRegister.com) - A ninth-grade term paper launched Courtney McEachon’s pro-life message. “My interest in the abortion question began when I wrote a term paper for ninth-grade biology on stem-cell research,” recalled the 21-year-old Yale University senior. “Even growing up in the Catholic Church and attending Catholic school had not exposed me to this issue until then. After that paper, the nagging began: If the product of conception really was a baby, and if a baby really was a person with intrinsic moral value, then abortion is murder, and worse than the injustice itself was perhaps the silence surrounding it. Since then, I’ve been passionate about the pro-life movement.” MORE

February 8 is the First International Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Human Trafficking

(USCCB.org) —The feast day of St. Josephine Bakhita, February 8, has been designated as the first International Day of Prayer and Awareness against Human Trafficking. Last year, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Committee on Migration designated such date as an annual day of prayer for survivors and victims of human trafficking. Later that year, the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and the International Union of Superiors General at the Vatican, announced that the 2015 event will also be observed internationally. St. Josephine Bakhita was kidnapped as a child and sold into slavery in Sudan and taken to Italy. MORE

“The Apology”: three men express their sorrow for their participation in an abortion

(nationalrighttolifenews.org) - Funny that such a rough road could lead me to a terrific pro-life resource. I’d seen a passing slur from a pro-abortion site, badmouthing a new video that (we were told) was all about men trying to “control women.” I had meant to look it up but did not. Today I saw an allusion to “The Apology” on the Catholic News Agency website. It’s only a little over four minutes long…and wow! Every time NRL News Today writes about men and abortion, we say we don’t talk enough about the oft-times critical role of men in whether or not a woman takes the life of their unborn child. One of my resolutions for 2015 is that we don’t make that oversight. “The Apology” is built around the abortion experiences of three men all of whom are now Christian believers from different faith backgrounds, one of whom is a pastor. Bishops Praise Supreme Court Examination of Death-Penalty Protocols

(NCRegister.com) — Several bishops in the U.S. have welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to re-examine death-penalty protocols and have called for the abolition of the death penalty. “We pray that the court’s review of these protocols will lead to the recognition that institutionalized practices of violence against any person erode reverence for the sanctity of every human life. Capital punishment must end,” Cardinal Sean O’Malley of Boston, who chairs the U.S. bishops’ pro-life activities committee, said Jan. 27. Archbishop Thomas Wenski of Miami, who chairs the committee on domestic justice, said recent executions have shown “how the use of the death penalty devalues human life and diminishes respect for human dignity.” MORE

New Pampers Ad Celebrating Babies : The Most Powerful Pro-Life Video You’ve Ever Seen

(LifeNews.com) - While the upcoming Superbowl ads count on puppies and scantily clad women for views, Pampers is counting on something infinitely more precious: babies – both born and unborn. Pampers’ new ad, “A Newborn Journey of Firsts,” boasts almost 950,000 views on YouTube since its release earlier this month. With the video’s focus on multiple babies, Pampers aims to show how “every first is significant no matter how small they seem” – “[f]rom the first scan to the first cuddle.” From the beginning, the video shows a sonogram of a baby giving her first “hello” with a heartbeat playing in the background. Pope Addresses ‘Fatherhood Crisis,’ Reminding Men That Children Need Guidance

(NCRegister.com) —  In his general audience catechesis on Jan. 28, Pope Francis turned to the role of fathers, saying that they play an irreplaceable role in family life, and their absence leaves children prey to false idols. “When children feel neglected by fathers who focus only on their problems, on their work or their own personal realization, this creates a situation of orphans in the children and youth of today, who live disoriented, without the good example or prudent guidance of a father,” the Pope said. Pope Francis directed his words to pilgrims gathered in the Vatican’s Paul VI Hall for his Wednesday address.  MORE

Pope Francis Corner: 2014 in Review

In 2014 Pope Francis made Christian marriage and family life a recurring theme of his pontificate.
He reflected on topics such as the Sacrament of Marriage, marital love, the importance of family life, family difficulties, and the value of children and the elderly. Frequently the Holy Father discussed the threats to marriage posed by our culture today. He also spoke directly to Church clergy, as well as to young people. The Extraordinary Synod on the Family took place in October 2014 with the Ordinary Synod on the Family coming up in October 2015. Pope Francis commented about these events repeatedly.  Finally, the Holy Father was happy to announce that he will be coming to Philadelphia in September 2015 for the World Meeting of Families! MORE

The Public Relations of Death

By Richard M. Doerflinger

A campaign to legalize assisted suicide is moving forward in New Jersey, with similar proposals to be introduced in California, Maryland and other states. The former Hemlock Society (now under the more appealing name "Compassion & Choices") hopes to pass such bills in a dozen states this year, although its efforts produced new laws in only three states (Oregon, Washington and Vermont) in the past 25 years.

“Few souls understand what God would effect in them if they should give themselves entirely into His hands and allow His grace to act.” (St. Ignatius of Loyola)

Peace is not the product of terror or fear. Peace is not the silence of cemeteries. Peace is not the silent result of violent repression. Peace is the generous, tranquil contribution of all to the good of all. Peace is dynamism. Peace is generosity. It is right and it is duty.” (Archbishop Oscar Romero)

“In our day, marriage and the family are in crisis. We now live in a culture of the temporary, in which more and more people are simply giving up on marriage as a public commitment. This revolution in manners and morals has often flown the flag of freedom, but in fact it has brought spiritual and material devastation to countless human beings, especially the poorest and most vulnerable. Evidence is mounting that the decline of the marriage culture is associated with increased poverty and a host of other social ills, disproportionately affecting women, children and the elderly. It is always they who suffer the most in this crisis.” (Pope Francis)

“The family is the first essential cell of human society.” (Pope St. John XXIII)
