9 reasons why 2014 was a great year for pro-life

(LiveActionNews.org) - The pro-life movement experienced a milestone year, with huge national victories across the board. From a record number of pro-life legislators elected to Congress to wins protecting the freedom of conscience and pro-life legislation, 2014 was a benchmark year for pro-life. Not all pro-life victories of the past year were front-page news. Like Live Action investigations, some of the biggest pro-life victories happen “undercover.” Here are nine ways you made a difference with Live Action in 2014!

9) Millions of people saw the ugly truth about abortion.

Live Action’s groundbreaking investigations into the abortion industry shaped the dialogue on abortion. In 2014, Live Action’s “What is Human?” video went viral, obtaining millions of views on Facebook. This exposé, released as part of Live Action’s Inhuman investigation, revealed the ugly truth about late-term abortion through taped, undercover conversations with the abortionists who perform them. “What is Human?” details the abortion industry’s refusal to recognize the humanity of pre-born children, as well as the willingness of abortionists to violently slaughter babies in egregious late-term abortion procedures.

Pope: Mary and Joseph exemplify mission, vocation of family life

(CNA/EWTN News) - Pope Francis spoke today about Jesus’ choice to be born into a family, saying that it shows the importance of the vocation, which Mary and Joseph epitomized through their everyday holiness. “We can learn so much from Mary and Joseph, and especially from their love for Jesus. They help us to rediscover the vocation and mission of the family, of every family,” the Roman Pontiff told pilgrims present in St. Peter’s Square for his Dec. 17 general audience. Jesus, he noted, “was raised in an atmosphere of religious devotion (and) he learned from the words and example of Mary and Joseph.” In his second catechesis on the family, Pope Francis revealed that in preparation for next year’s ordinary synod of bishops on the family, the entire year’s weekly catechesis would be dedicated to that theme. Advent, he said, is a time of prayerful expectation for the Lord’s coming, and it invites each person to think about how the family, God’s gift since the beginning of creation, is honored and confirmed through Christ’s incarnation. This Pro-Life Doctor Once Did Abortions Until God Did This Amazing Thing

(LifeNews.com) Dr. John Bruchalski, is a former abortionist and now pro-life OB/GYN in Virginia. He once did abortions early in his career following medical school, but then an amazing thing happened. Bruchalski is the founder of the Tepeyac Family Center in Fairfax, Virginia which is one of the only all pro-life OB/GYN health care practices in the nation. Now that he is pro-life, he is a dynamic and engaging speaker whose story and style reaches people on all sides of the culture battle and shows them the value of an evidence-based approach to medicine and the value of treating the whole person. But it wasn’t always that way. It took a spark of the divine for him to get out of the abortion business. MORE

Births Slump to Record Low in CDC Data

(NCRegister.com) — Despite polls showing the U.S. tilting in a more pro-life direction, when it comes to the nation’s openness to life, the birthrate may be the one poll that matters most. According to the latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report, births in the United States have slid down over the past seven years to a record low. Newly released 2013 data from the CDC show close to 380,000 fewer births last year than in 2007. The birthrate has dropped 9% from 4.3 million babies born in 2007 to 3.9 million born in 2013. The nation’s general fertility rate is now at a record low of 62.5 per 1,000 women aged 15-44. That rate will generate 1.86 children for each fertile woman, well below the total fertility rate of 2.1 children required to maintain a stable population level without immigration. MORE

The Next 26 Hobby Lobbys: Obama is Trying to Force These Businesses to Obey HHS Mandate

(LifeNews.com) - In July, the United States Supreme Court ruled that Hobby Lobby, a Christian-run store, doesn’t have to obey the HHS mandate that is a part of Obamacare that requires businesses to pay for abortifacents in their employee health care plans. As LifeNews previously reported, writing for the 5-4 majority, Justice Samuel Alito handed down the decision for the court, saying, “The Supreme Court holds government can’t require closely held corporations with religious owners to provide contraception coverage.” The court ruled that the Obama’s contraception mandate violated the Religious Freedom and Restoration Act, a 1993 law and it held that the mandate “substantially burdens the exercise of religion” and that HHS didn’t use the “least restrictive means” to promote this government interest, tests required by RFRA. Doctor Saves 106 Babies After the Abortion Has Already Started

(LifeNews.com) – Since the introduction of the dangerous RU 486 (mifepristone) abortion drug, pro-life physicians have focused on coming up with a method of reversing the abortion pill process if a mother decides immediately after taking it that she wants her baby. It’s not commonly known that the RU 486 abortion drug process can be reversed if a mother changes her mind about the abortion in time. LifeNews has chronicled a number of women who have already reversed their abortions. However, a protocol has already been developed for helping women who changed their minds about going through with a multi-day second-trimester abortion after it’s been started. The process, which involves reversing a second trimester abortions by removing the laminaria, can be used as long as the abortion practitioner has not yet done the lethal injection that destroys the life of the unborn baby. For Archbishop Chaput, Holy Family holds lesson on immigration

(CNA/EWTN News) .- Faithful Catholics “need to remember that the Holy Family too was once a family of immigrants and refugees,” Archbishop Charles J. Chaput of Philadelphia said on the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. He stressed: “we need to treat the undocumented among us with the mercy and justice we expect for ourselves.” Archbishop Chaput’s Dec. 12 statement connected the Holy Family’s flight to Egypt to the stories of many immigrants today. “Mary – our mother; the mother of the Church – had an intimate understanding of suffering, flight, homelessness and uncertainty,” he said. The archbishop said that Mary’s honorific titles are “richly deserved” but “can sometimes obscure the human reality of Mary’s life.” MORE

Doctors Push to Allow Death by Organ Donation

(NCRegister.com) — Cases like that of Martha Perez, a 26-year-old woman whose family said they felt pressured to donate her organs in Arlington, Texas, last month, following a tragic car crash, highlight public uncertainty about the medical definition of “brain death.” “But she still has heart and lung functions,” family member Juan Martinez told MyFoxDFW.com before her organs were harvested. “They took her off life support, and she was still breathing. My family feels pressured, and it’s just hard for someone to make that kind of decision when this just happened.” To avoid public confusion over complicated definitions like “brain death,” some doctors and bioethicists are now saying it would be better  — and more “honest” — to simply allow the killing of patients by surgically removing their vital organs.MORE

Tinsel or Garland?

By Paul and Sarah Jarzembowski

Tinsel or garland? Real or fake? In our first year of marriage, that was our first major argument as a couple. We were looking forward to our first Christmas together, and each of us had our family traditions in mind when we imagined what that might look like. Paul had grown up with tinsel-covered artificial trees, put up over Thanksgiving weekend. Sarah’s family had real trees, wrapped in garland that they bought only a few days before Christmas.

So when the holiday season arrived in our house for the first time, we had to figure out what we would do. After some heated discussions and some false accusations (such as: “You don’t care about my family, do you?”), we finally came to a decision: garland on a fake tree, put up the first or second week of December. Learning to Cry

By Tom Grenchik

Friends of mine recently adopted a little girl, “Annie,” from another country. As could be expected, Annie has become the center of attention of her new mom and dad and her three new brothers. One remarkable story they shared is that it took some time living in their home before Annie learned to cry.

In some crowded orphanages, they explained, children learn that crying does not elicit an immediate response. There are simply too many children in need and not enough caregivers to help. Little ones quickly learn that if no one is going to respond, crying doesn’t yield positive results. MORE

“A church that doesn't provoke any crisis, a gospel that doesn't unsettle, a Word of God that doesn't get under anyone's skin, what kind of gospel is that? Preachers who avoid every thorny matter so as not to be harassed do not light up the world.” (Archbishop Oscar Romero)

“Even the weakest and most vulnerable, the sick, the old, the unborn and the poor, are masterpieces of God’s creation, made in his own image, destined to live for ever, and deserving of the utmost reverence and respect.” (Pope Francis)

“Peace is also threatened by every denial of human dignity, firstly the lack of access to adequate nutrition. We cannot be indifferent to those suffering from hunger, especially children, when we think of how much food is wasted every day in many parts of the world immersed in what I have often termed “the throwaway culture”. Unfortunately, what is thrown away is not only food and dispensable objects, but often human beings themselves, who are discarded as “unnecessary”. For example, it is frightful even to think there are children, victims of abortion, who will never see the light of day; children being used as soldiers, abused and killed in armed conflicts; and children being bought and sold in that terrible form of modern slavery which is human trafficking, which is a crime against humanity.” (Pope Francis)
